A Place Called Novosibirsk, 2004, aluminum/epoxy resin, ca. 270 x 150 x 80 cm

This work was created based on Urs Fischer’s experiments with air balloons in the Kunstgiesserei: a balloon raises a broom handle!

In order to maintain a uniform inner tension, the balloon was filled with plaster in a water bath. The hardened casting was removed from the skin of the balloon and laminated in a silicon form with wafer-thin epoxy resin – a “balloon” with a minimal weight of its own was created. A workshop broom cast in aluminum was screwed to the floor. The metal rod on which the balloon appears to float was fixed to the end of the handle.
