Since the 1980s, Stingel has been exploring the scope of painting between conceptual austereness and suggestive decoration. His spatial interventions are simple and yet have a physical intensity that is often described as “baroque”. They monopolize/co-opt both the space and the viewers, and provoke their own creative drive.

For the wall relief, Rudolf Stingel had a carving with flamboyantly ornate Rococo ornamentation produced in South Tyrol. From it, twelve identical segments in a format of 100 x 110 centimeters were assembled. The series was first produced in Italy in a black synthetic material. The material proved to be problematic since it warped and the individual pieces, therefore, no longer fit together accurately. A decision was, therefore, made for a molding in plaster.
After being reworked, the wood original was molded in silicon in the Kunstgiesserei and cast in pure gypsum plaster. In order to prevent the formation of air bubbles, the plaster was mixed in a vacuum. To reduce the weight and to provide stability, the castings were given a core of aluminum sheeting; nevertheless, each individual piece weighs round 75 kilograms. Each segment was equipped with a mounted device and hung individually on the wall.
