In the Presence of Nothing, 2009–2010, original singing bowl, wood plinth, mechanism, 238 x 45.3 x 45.3 cm
A traditional Indian singing bowl should be made to resonate by means of a mechanically operated clapper. This uniform movement simulates the movement of the monk who touches the bowl with his hand. The Kunstgiesserei developed the singing bowl under these guidelines in cooperation with Bharti Kher. In a predetermined rhythm, the clapper is paused by a timer, and the bowl slowly stops resonating. Two motors regulate the pivoting movement on the one hand, and the raising of the clapper on the other. In this project, the focus was above all on the juxtaposition of tradition and modern.
The sculpture was shown in the solo exhibition “inevitable undeniable necessary” in Hauser and Wirth gallery in London.
