The craft of casting has a six-thousand-year history. The work of art casting continues to be accompanied by research and experimentation until today. Since most of the works produced are usually individual custom-made pieces, each work presents new challenges. In addition to casting, we are increasingly working on mechanical and digital solutions, which we execute using the most modern technologies.
As a result of improved data storage, it has also become possible in recent years to employ scanning, display and forming techniques in the case of complex artistic forms. The Kunstgiesserei has dedicated itself to the various methods of scanning and digital mold making since it was established in the 1980s. Since 2008, the Kunstgiesserei has had its own large milling center.
The Kunstgiesserei has forty to fifty employees from various professional fields and also trains apprentices. The large spectrum of craftsmanship and technical fields provides a diversity of expertise and optimal flexibility.
The Sitterwerk Foundation was established in 2006 and with its Art Library, Material Archive, Studio House and the Kesselhaus Josephsohn, forms the institutional center in a network of producers of art and cultural-entrepreneurial enterprises.
In 2009, the Fotolabor was established nearby the Kunstgiesserei and the Sitterwerk. Managed by Bettina Tobler and Michel Dettling, two photo lab technicians with long years of experience, we produce high-quality analog and digital prints as well as high resolution scans, and also offer digital image processing. The best possible results for professional requirements are created in close cooperation with the artists.
